Camber House
Camber House replaced a surface car park that had broken the Rochdale Canal towpath for thirty years. The building repairs the street, opens the water back up to the neighbourhood, and filled within four months of completion.
The brick facade steps down towards the canal, keeping afternoon light on the towpath and letting the building read as a row of smaller buildings rather than a single block. Apartments face either the water or a planted courtyard, and every corner home has windows on two sides.
The ground floor was let deliberately: a bookshop, a wine bar and a hardware store rather than the highest bidder. A residents’ lounge and workspace overlook the canal basin, looked after by a building manager we employ directly.
